All Activities Specialists are hired as Activities Specialist Trainees and do not have access to students while their state background is processing. Training assignments are completed during this time. Once your state background check is returned and cleared, your title transitions to Activities Specialist. You can begin shadowing on the floor at this time.
Plans, organizes, and leads Activities programs, day trips, multi-day trips, clubs and assigned activities relating to recreation at EOSIS Utah. This position is an integral part of the treatment milieu and is incorporated into the process including assessment, documentation, charting, appropriate curriculum development, and evaluation.
Supervised By: Activities Director
Work Environment:
The facility, recreation fields on campus, recreational facilities in the community and the outdoor environment. It is understood that activities take place in a wide variety of conditions, often inclement weather, and require the ability to function effectively as such.
Workers Supervised: As assigned by Activities Director
Interpersonal Relationships/Personnel Contacts:
All clinical, education, nursing, and mentor personnel.
Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and conduct recreation programming including: outdoor education, overnight camping trips, physical education, leisure education, community service activities, pro-social activities, experiential education activities, and off campus day activities.
- Plan, organize, and lead Experiential activities at Parent Seminars and Parent Pathways.
- Completion of required documentation in a timely, effective manner.
- Responsible for assuring the safety and proper maintenance of any equipment used.
- Completes and follows risk management plans for all outdoor activities.
- Attends regular Recreation Department meetings and participates in required training.
- Assists in maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment for all staff and students.
- Establishes good relationships with all community agencies.
- Assists with professional relations activities as assigned.
- Assists with IOP and HR activities as assigned.
- Responsible for training and on-boarding of newly hired staff within the department.
- Responsible for equipment inventory and management.
- Responsible for inter-departmental communication and coordination.
- Compile monthly recreation newsletters to be put on Parent Portal and other internal marketing materials to promote activities to students and staff.
- Fills in for Recreation Director in their absence.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisory or administrative personnel.
Skills & Qualifications
Education:
Associates degree or higher or commensurate experience. Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate field preferred. Appropriate certifications in area of specialty and eligibility for additional training in other areas as deemed necessary. CPR certification required. Food Handler’s permit required.
Training and Experience:
Minimum of two years experience working with children or adolescents in recreation/activity setting. Background, knowledge and skills in a variety of activities is key to being effective in this role. Prior experience with an adolescent treatment program and/or teaching is preferred.
Knowledge Required:
Must possess the ability to plan and carry out activities for adolescents. Must be able to follow oral and written communication. Must possess knowledge of outdoor industry standards, best practices and safety management protocols. Able to instruct, direct and participate in activities. Must be able to initiate and modify activities according to student participation, ability, and need. Ability to write, learn, and follow new and established protocols for activities. Must be able to instruct peers in techniques and procedures and run training programs for other staff. Must be able to plan and carry out recreational activities for adolescents with an emphasis on skill progression. Knowledge and experience in experiential philosophy and practice are a plus. Must possess basic knowledge of rules, procedures, and equipment for a variety of physical, pro-social, and diversionary activities. Ability to effectively instruct, direct, and participate in a variety of recreation and outdoor activities.
Physical Demands:
General
Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, and grasp. Ability to run. Must be able to perceive the attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature and/or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips. Ability to express and exchange ideas via spoken word during activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to others accurately, sometimes quickly and loudly. Hearing to perceive the nature of sounds with no less than 40 db loss @ Hz, 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz with or without correction. Ability to perceive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound. Perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers. Be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and to be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Work requires a minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction what will enable people in the role to complete administrative and clerical tasks and visually observe students.
Specific
Must be able to pursue, on foot, students who attempt to elope from the facility. Must be able to escort a physically escalated student to an area in which they could attempt to de-escalate away from others. Must be able to assist in emergency behavior and behavior crisis situations which may involve placing a student in a therapeutic hold if the student presents an imminent danger to self or others. Must be able to engage in all physical activities with students to ensure proper supervision and role modeling.
